This is a very interesting video that demonstrates a few alarming trends in US policies, attitudes and politics. I haven’t heard of Brigitte Gabriel before this and am not a fan, as you will see shortly.

I thought some of the “factual” (however, I’d want to see some supporting documentation before asserting her claims as truly factual) aspects of her talk were worth being concerned about. Using schools as a platform for religious indoctrination is dangerous, and placing students in a position where they have no choice but to take the class or fail is completely unacceptable. Of course, abuses like these are more likely in a highly regulated environment as is the case in our school systems (public and private).

However, I have to disagree with a lot of the opinions that Brigitte espoused in this talk. After looking up her background, I understand where she is coming from and why she has so much venom for Islam as a whole. Unfortunately, her viewpoints are just as polarizing as those she is raging against. The idea that anyone who criticizes the US or is ashamed of some the actions that we have taken in the past should be bought a one way ticket out of the country is extremely dangerous and the opposite of the attitudes that members of a Republic should have.

I for one am a huge critic of the US and am ashamed of the arrogance of our actions in the areas of foreign policy and the use of military power to force our US-centric agenda on the world. Does that make me un-American, worthy of deportation? I don’t think so.

I’m a libertarian and my views are the views of many of our Founding Fathers. I know for a fact that my schooling was not “tainted” by Saudi money as Ms. Gabriel would assert. I hold my views in spite of, not because of, the “tainted” mainstream media. I look to men such as Franklin, Jefferson, von Mises, Hayek, and Friedman for my guidance and inspiration.

In my opinion, the only religion in politics that’s worth a damn is the Church of Liberty presided over by popes Free Market and Individual Responsibility. If your personal brand of religion whether it’s Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Atheist or other; supports the individual freedom of others, then great. However, in my experience applying the blanket statement that everyone of a certain belief does or does not support individual liberty is patently false.

Glenn, you’re wrong. You’re contradicting yourself. You’re saying things that simply aren’t true… If you’re really interested in learning the answer to your question, read the book. It shouldn’t be too hard for a Mormon and self-described libertarian such as yourself to put two and two together…. Until then, stop saying stupid things. Please?

Democratic structures can become tyrannical… They will clamour for new leadership and demand that a tyrant be brought into power… through a democratic process. This is true with Napoleon, this is true for Hitler, this is true for Julius Caesar. These are all examples of historical tyrants that came into power because of not in spite of democratic structures.

Renner

Let Us Have Peace by J Reuben Clark

Let Us Have Peace by J Reuben Clark:

In my view, our whole international course and policy is basically wrong, and must be changed if peace is to come. Our policy has brought us, and pursued, will continue to bring us, only the hatred of nations now — and we cannot thrive on that, financially or spiritually — and certain war hereafter, with a list of horrors and woes we do not now even surmise. If we really want peace, we must change our course to get it. We must honestly strive for peace and quit sparring for military advantage.

Interesting how this talk was given back in 1947. How little we have learned and how great a price we have paid for our collective ignorance and pride.

[Y]ou seem to think that your world is the real world, and that the real world is something I’m impossibly distanced from. You say that missionaries, in particular, are immune to reality. “Mormons see the world,” you say, “but they don’t get it.”

Germans were not the only Mormons captivated by the romance of Hitler, especially early on. Statements by enthusiastic American church members made their way to Germany. Some were shockingly antisemitic – we tend to forget today how wide-spread antisemitism used to be in the US, and Mormons here were not immune to it either.

German saints were also aware of an unsigned editorial in a British church magazine, The Millennial Star, which enthused about Hitler and the New Germany, saying it was clear der Führer had been raised up by God to prepare the world for the millennium.
